PREMIERE: FLUT // Emanuele Soavi incompany // 5/9/21 // Oper Köln, Staatenhaus 2

Beethoven’s constant drive for artistic renewal and his dissecting, visionary view of the social and political movements of his era lend his work a seemingly inexhaustible energy. Like a perpetual flood of the most diverse emotional and intellectual states, it is transmitted to the listener, influencing being and experience, just as the tide in nature changes landscape and living conditions.

Following this idea of constant change, in FLUT both the musical formations and the stage space designed by Darko Petrovic each take on a new shape and size. The international dance ensemble varies the language of form and quality of movement, the choreography creates contemporary, dynamic images of a society in upheaval. Conceived as a triptych, FLUT juxtaposes two key works by Beethoven with a world premiere that takes fragments of both works and transforms them into electronic sounds and traces of sound. Inspired by Beethoven’s personality and life path, Emanuele Soavi draws on this musical foil a universe of the I that raises existential questions, has to face the fear of the unknown and constantly re-locate itself with its identity: The I as a social being, creative individual and bearer of unexpected inner worlds. Since 2012, Emanuele Soavi incompany has been working in cooperation with (inter)national artists in various formats on interdisciplinary, structural and artistic networking, communally, regionally, nationally, internationally and is breaking new ground as a “bridge builder” between institution and independent scene, heritage and present, laboratory and large-scale project, research and practice, artists and audience.
