From an early age, young dancers move between different cultures and social structures. They know what it means to be a stranger, in their own body, in their own family, in a foreign country, in another language area and sometimes even in a foreign culture. They know the fear of “the strangers” and they also know the fear of “the strangers” of them. Gradually they learn to recognise prejudices and to overcome them with humour and humanity. Strangers to Ourselves is a piece for four dancers: The dancers treat each other without understanding, awkwardly, dismissively, contemptuously or with violence, but they can also be benevolent, full of appreciation, strong and loving. The multimedia dance piece questions the way we deal with ourselves, with xenophobia and racism.
