PREMIERE: CocoonDance // Standard // 30/10/22 // Ringlokschuppen Ruhr

In STANDARD the world is upside down. And this despite the fact that standard dance knows how to stage the order of society and the self-control of its members in a virtuoso way. The dance company CocoonDance takes a close look at standard dance as a special form of social dance and deals with it as with a completely unknown form of movement: standard dances are deconstructed and transformed into new forms of movement. The focus of the research, among others with the WDC world champions in freestyle standard dance, Yulia and Paul Lorenz (participants in “Let’s Dance” and “Dancing Stars”) was the upright dance couple and the four-legged form of movement. In search of the unthought body, CocoonDance explores the paradoxes of freedom and control, improvisation and notation, desire and propriety inherent in social dance. The resulting creatures lead us into a world of wavering elegance.

In the constant search for the “unthought body”, the CocoonDance Company around choreographer Rafaële Giovanola regularly transgresses the boundaries of dance – convincing us with fascinating and outstanding works of aesthetic density. Since 2000, the company, based in Bonn and Monthey (CH), has created around 40 productions, travelled to five continents and been honoured with several invitations to the most important events of the scene on a national and international level (Tanzplattform Deutschland, STEPS Festival, etc.). Recently, CocoonDance released its “MoveApp”, which allows dance enthusiasts to digitally network with each other. The aim is to create a low-threshold glossary of contemporary dance, which is constantly being expanded through the contributions of the users.
