PREMIERE: GEISTER (Say Goodbye) // Ben J. Riepe & Dance Company Theater Osnabrück // 9/11/19 // Theater Osnabrück
In GEISTER (SAY GOODBYE), the Düsseldorf choreographer Ben J. Riepe and the Osnabrück dancers approach thematically the “spirits” that humans themselves create in the anthropocene, the earth age determined by human intervention, and which have a massive influence on earth and climate. At the end of this development stands a great farewell – that of man from the earth. And so GEISTER (SAY GOODBYE) is a swan song on humanity, which threatens to fail grandiosely as a large-scale cosmic experiment. But we smile to the end, because the history of the world will continue even without us, while we ourselves end as a ghostly marginal phenomenon of the history of the earth.
With movement, dance, language, live singing, new and old sounds from electro-sounds to Vivaldi, Riepe shows how man sinks back from the vertical to the horizontal in a reversed evolutionary development. Prototypical gestures of being human and “dehumanized” movements are juxtaposed and the emerging chaos of the approaching end is celebrated just as much as the lost world order is mourned in a moving way. The emerging melancholy is repeatedly confronted with tongue-in-cheek irony – because for the world, as well as for mankind dancing against farewell, the same applies: “The show must go on”.
