PREMIERE: Cherchez la femme // Cooperativa Maura Morales // 20/11/19 // FFT Düsseldorf
In her internationally acclaimed dance pieces, Düsseldorf choreographer Maura Morales repeatedly focuses on the fate and power of female figures. Sisyphos thus served as a model for the hardship of female biographies. In her interpretation, the dazzling mythical Phaidra became the driven force between youth and old age. Most recently she worked on the #MeToo debate in “Phobos” with an ensemble of dancers.
The Cuban-born artist was inspired by the American photographer Francesca Woodman for her new production, which is now being premiered at the FFT Düsseldorf. Her photographs have a disturbing effect. In the atmospheric black-and-white photographs, she can usually be seen herself: Nude photographs in abandoned houses, ghostly apparitions. Woodman, who took her own life in 1981 at the age of 22, is both an object for the viewer and an artistic subject behind the production. What is beauty? And what does this attribution mean? Cherchez la femme is a breathtaking play with images and narratives about the female body. Together with two other dancers, she explores Woodman’s work and creates a disturbing and beautiful visual world to Michio Woirgardt’s live music.
