BodyCult – BodyOptimization – in the Age of Extremes
The walk-in dance installation pUFFING bODIES questions the (in)possible transformations of the body between political necessity and desired gender. As a continuation of the choreographic series “Body as Display”, the ensembles IPtanz from Cologne and actors of the Maya Dance Theatre from Singapore dedicate their first international colloboration to the intercultural dialogue between contemporary body motifs, aspects of “aesthetic” design and utopian visions. The cult of one’s own body and that of others has its origins in ancient times – whether in the Egyptians and their full-body shaving or in the corsets and frock coats widespread in the Baroque period – the disfigurement, alienation and transformation of the body was and is a central trademark that runs through all epochs.
In pUFFING bODIES, both ensembles jointly stage the manifold perspectives on the body. Four dancers, four bodies in the room of the Hochbunker in Cologne-Ehrenfeld – as fashionable, as a political platform, as a societal condition between artificial The possibilities of design and the biological process of ageing.
