PRMIERE: Boys don’t dance // Takao Baba / E-Motion // 13/7/19 // Alte Farbwerke Halle 21 / asphalt festival
Digital networking, social media and the representation of the individual self are topics that are so present that they even play a role with children. To what extent is body language influenced from outside? Are there movements that are typical for boys or girls? And what happens if you mix these categories? Takao Baba and his ensemble get to the bottom of these questions in Boys don’t dance. The starting point is movements like the ‘Dab’ or dance moves from the online game ‘Fortnite’, which can now be observed in every schoolyard. The dancers want to explore those dance styles that have spread virally and are already firmly anchored in the movement repertoire of children together with movement freaks from the age of 6. What does it mean to detach movements from their context and consciously use them? Through imitation and further development, rhythm and the use of music, a body language of one’s own is created which is discovered together.
